What is Contract Packing? - Contract Packing and Kitting

What Is Contract Packing and Kitting In Fulfilment?

Many businesses sell products that require an extra step in the picking and packing process, which we call kitting. You may have heard of this process called bundling, grouping, or contract packaging. In short, product kitting sees warehouse employees collect and arrange multiple smaller items into one parcel to be shipped as a whole.

A good example of kitting in fulfilment is subscription boxes or promotional sends, which Codestorm create for many of our e-commerce partners. Different items with different SKUs are taken from the warehouse and arranged as one effective “product” in an individual parcel ready for shipment. With monthly subscription boxes or promotional products that are all the same, this kitting process can be executed on a huge scale, creating literally thousands, or hundreds of thousands of parcels, each with the same collection of items inside.

Product Kitting: A step-by-step guide

When you choose the Codestorm team to support basic or advanced co-packing services, we’ll work together with your team to understand product make up, order volumes, packing specification, and timings for goods inwards as well as send schedules.  Together we’ll quickly build an accurate quote for contract packing services that consider the staff, schedule, and any potential additional shift patterns needed to create the best product service possible. We’ll also work with you to define shipment plans too – i.e. will you want us to pack and ship your orders as soon as possible? Or are you hoping to create a packed and ready backlog of orders ready for future launch?

Wondering how e-commerce fulfilment businesses like Codestorm carry out your product kitting after being instructed? Here’s how, in four simple steps:

1

Your dedicated Account Manager will work with you to thoroughly plan out the requirements of your Contract Packing and Kitting orders. Based on your volume and requirements we’ll work with our extensive carrier network to calculate the most cost-effecting postage fees for your requirements.

2

Our team of warehouse pickers and packers combine your products into the perfect required kit. Whilst LINK and your Account team will also monitor and advise on both sales patterns and inventory levels to avoid over-building.

3

We bulk advise your chosen courier service(s) on collection and delivery of kits to be sent to your customers along with any special requirements or delivery notes. In the meantime our team will print and affix all labels ready to be shipped.

4

The product kit is shipped to your customer via the best possible postage option. In the meantime, all the data on pick, pack and post is available realtime in your e-commerce platform(s).

Why Use Our Contract Packaging Service?

Cost-effective

At Codestorm, we have strong industry knowledge that allows our team to advise you on how to optimise your product kitting process for maximum cost-effectiveness. Our team of e-commerce afficionados are on hand to advise you on how to keep your shipping costs low by choosing products for your co-packing bundles that remain under weight and dimension thresholds. We work alongside you to ensure that each parcel you deliver sits at an optimal weight to mitigate any unexpected shipping fee hikes that could damage your profits.

Packed and ready to go

Kitting can commence before your product even goes up for sale on your website or via your promotional channel, allowing you to get ahead and construct parcels ready to be labelled and sent out to your customers as soon as orders are placed. This is particularly valuable for subscription boxes, promotions and ‘edits’ which you know will sell well. By expediting the kitting process, your products are delivered to your customers with great speed, improving their customer experience and increasing the likelihood of repeat purchases.

Promote products as value bundles

Wanting to appeal to more new customers? Value bundles are a fantastic way to do so, offering customers the opportunity to try a selection of your best products in an easy-to-order kit. What’s more, with reduced shipping costs compared to shipping products individually, you can offer appealing discounts on kitted bundles through contract filling.

Utilise dead stock

Do you have products that are nearing their sell-by date? Have products sitting around that simply aren’t shifting? Utilising contract packaging is a great way to ensure that your customers utilise these products and don’t simply sit on shelves ready to go to waste. This is also a great method for keeping on top of your inventory by bundling bestselling items with items that aren’t receiving the attention they deserve from your customers. It’s the perfect way of promoting your lesser-known products to your customers and ensuring that your stock isn’t accumulating.

The Codestorm Difference

LINK

At Codestorm, our specialist e-fulfilment tool, LINK, provides valuable live insights into every order we pick, pack and distribute. You’ll know that certain products are frequently purchased together – for example, cafétieres and coffee, or wine and chocolates. These pairings make great gift sets and contain products that work well together – and whilst these are pretty classic pairings with LINK, you’ll see beyond the obvious. With insights from LINK, we provide you with the information you need to guide your product kitting, allowing you to create product bundles that customers will want to buy.

Fantastic customer service

Oftentimes, product bundles are used to appeal to new customers hoping to try an array of items from your business. It is vital that you impress these customers and convert them into loyal repeat purchasers – the key to this is fantastic customer service. After all, more than 50% of customers stated that they would refuse to re-purchase from a business after just one poor experience. At Codestorm, we believe that our responsibility to customers carries on far after their products have been delivered. Our dedicated customer service team are on-hand to process returns and provide replacements in the unlikely event of customer dissatisfaction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are kitting and bundling the same?

In essence, yes – both kitting and bundling bring together multiple individual products and prepares them to be shipped together. The difference between kitting and bundling is most prominent when it comes to the way products are labelled in warehouses. Whereas product kits have one overall SKU for inventory management, product bundles maintain the SKUs of their individual components. As such, kitting creates a whole new product with its own SKU, whereas product bundles simply collate individual items with their own original SKUs.

What are examples of product kitting and co-packing?

Kitting is used across a range of businesses and is used to promote products such as

  • Promotions: a group of products are sold en-masse via a new or existing promotional channel, mainly used to attract new customers and build loyalty with existing customers.
  • Subscription boxes: a selection of products are shipped out on a specific schedule, allowing customers to experience new products and replenish the stock of their favourites.
  • Ready-to-order ‘edits’: one-off, limited edition edits that combine multiple products within a particular product category.
  • Bundles: a collection of items usually purchased together, brought to customers in a bundle for a better price. These can also take the form of ‘mystery bundles’ that provide an opportunity to get rid of excess, slow-moving, or close-to-expiration stock
